Derived Word’s primary objective: Help students learn to identify and spell words that have a one syllable base word and a prefix or suffix. Derived Words is one of two programs in the Multi-Syllabic facet of SWAN — Spelling and Word Attack Nexus. Other SWAN programs: B-A-R: Build-A-Rhyme Flash Charts—Short Flash Charts—Long Flash Charts—Digraph Flash Charts—R-Control Compound Words Derived Words is organized by the base word’s vowel type (long, short, etc). This is the exact same organization used in the Flash Charts series. Derived Words can be used as an extension of Flash Charts. Map Numbers and Vowel-Consonant Numbers match, making it easy to go directly from one program to the other. The result is one of sixteen possible combinations: short-short, short-long, ... Step 3: Choose a Vowel-Consonant Pattern for the first syllable. Step 4: Choose a V-C Pattern for the second syllable. You now see a word that meets your criteria. If your search yields more than one word a large arrow will be underneath that word. Click that arrow to see the second word. Use arrows to navigate through your list of compound words.
