Build-A-Rhyme — Short’s primary objective is to help students solidify and develop rhyming skills. Specifically, one syllable words with a short vowel. A good readiness test for B-A-R is the question, “What rhymes with cat and starts with /f/ ?” B-A-R’s organization makes generalizations jump out. Even if students cannot articulate a generalization, their unconscious mind picks up on it. Words begin to “look right.” Once a student finishes a group of rhyming words select the dot representing that group and choose a color. A visual representation of their progress is motivational. So simple, yet so effective.
