Flash Charts - Short is one of four in a series of programs entitled Flash Charts. The other three are for: Long Vowel Sounds, Vowel Digraph Sounds and R-Controlled Vowels. Flash Charts are similar to flash cards, but instead of having one word per card there are multiple words per Chart. Why learn just one word when it is just as easy, often easier, to learn a group? Words are chosen to be on the same Flash Chart have something in common that will help students develop an understanding of how our language is put together: First of all, all Flash Charts words have one syllable. This is because one syllable words and multi-syllabic words require different strategies. When encountering a word that needs to be sounded out one of the first questions one should ask is what is the vowel type. Thus, the four programs — Short, Long, Digraphs and R-Controlled. Vowel-Consonant Patterns are the key for determining vowel type. Flash Charts center around the V-C Pattern. Flash Charts and Build-A-Rhyme are quite similar. Use Build-A-Rhyme for emerging readers. Use Flash Charts for remediation and for students already possessing some word attack skills.
