INTRODUCTION HIV-1 infection followed by AIDS spread worldwide during the 1980s (1,2). Initially, HIV occurred mainly among individuals, such as homosexuals and intravenous drug users, in many parts of America, whereas in parts of Africa, the infection has spread among general population mainly through heterosexual contacts (1-3).
