Of all of the biology courses I have taught this syllabus is good one but it can be a tricky one. The syllabus is broad, but ill focused in my opinion. It hangs around the central theme of the Populations and Environment, but the sections on photosynthesis and respiration really do not fit in here. The material is straight forward to learn but the exam papers have very specific mark schemes with little leeway for errors, or tangential points.
This is why a student needs all the help they can get on this AS course and this is where an ebook fits in. I have tried to structure the points given here around the syllabus and what is required in examination papers.
The topics covered here are;
Populations
Ecosystems, populations and communities
Feeding relationships (food chains etc)
Carbon, nitrogen and water cycle
Environment
Coping with a growing population
Global warming, acid rain, carbon monoxide and pesticide pollutants
Pollution with fertilizers and sewage
Succession
Inheritance and Speciation
Inheritance
The Hardy Weinberg Principle
Selection and Speciation
ATP
Respiration
Glycolysis and Anaerobic Respiration
The Krebs Cycle
Respiration in Plants
Photosynthesis
Leaf structure
The Light Dependent Reactions
The Light Independent Reactions
Population and Environment
I have strived to ensure the text is as accurate and clear as possible with as many accompanying diagrams as possible. I will over time adjust texts or write new chapters depending on feedback I receive for these volumes.
Where appropriate I have included animations or movies. I have usually used animations as they seem to be the best way to present information.
