This ebook was written to support the AQA Biology AS syllabus with Units 1, 2 and 3. Of all of the biology courses I have taught this syllabus is good one but it can be a tricky one. The syllabus is broad, but ill focused in my opinion. It hangs loosely around the central theme of the Biology and disease (Unit 1) Diversity of life (Unit 2), but this is hardly evident in most of the sections to this unit. The material is straight forward to learn but the exam papers have very specific mark schemes with little leeway for errors, or tangential points. This is why a student needs all the help they can get on this AS course and this is where an ebook fits in. I have tried to structure the points given here around the syllabus and what is required in examination papers. Ebooks provide an excellent step forward in student led learning, which is particularly applicable to the AQA AS syllabus. For Biology, which is so wide ranging, and requires a student to gain an in depth knowledge of the subject, ebooks are a major resource. An ebook enables a student to; - access all of the materials needed for the whole syllabus (in a light accessible form), - search easily for particular words or topics, which is crucial in answering questions and background research for practical investigations, - to learn from many diagrams, illustrations and animations that can all be enlarged, - sections can be compared, and notes prepared for printing. This book is written by an ex-university lecturer and experienced biology teacher currently delivering the AS syllabus in the UK. The topics covered here are; UNIT 1 Digestion and Enzymes Cells The Heart Mammalian Lungs Diseases and its causes Principles of Immunology UNIT 2 Variation and DNA The cell cycle Genetic diversity Cell, tissues and organs Exchange and transport in organisms Taxonomy The variety of Life Antibiotic resistance UNIT 3: Practical work
