The Spanish American War of 1898 was fought between theSpaniards and the Americans. The war between the twonations took place when Cuba was fighting for itsindependence. The war had brought an end to Spanish rule onWestern Hemisphere and established the United States ofAmerica as a Pacific Power. With their victory in the warUnited States drafted a treaty which obligated Spain tosurrender all claims on Cuba. Spain also had to surrenderPuerto Rico, Guam and Philippines to America. United Statesalso took over Hawaii which was an independent state. TheSpanish American War strengthened America's position in theCaribbean.
