Peter Christen Asbjørnsen was a writer and scholar, born in Norwegian Christiana (now Oslo). His name is closely connected with the name of Jørgen Moe, his close childhood friend, with whom Asbjørnsen collected Norwegian folktales.
How They Got Hairlock Home, translated into English by G. W. Dasent, was first published in 1874 as a part of the second series of popular Norwegian tales, Tales from the Fjeld.
A classic example of Asbjørnsen's rather vigor and very charming style, the story captures the readers' attention at once.
