Description

Mr Satya Narayan Goenka (S.N. Goenka) (born 1924) is a Principal Teacher of Vipassana, an ancient Meditation technique rediscovered by the Buddha over 2,500 years ago and the practical quintessence of the Buddha's teaching. After a successful career in business, Goenka dedicated his life to spreading Vipassana, teaching it as a universal remedy for universal problems. In 1969, he was appointed a Vipassana teacher by his teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin, and he embarked on a mission to reintroduce Vipassana to India and subsequently to the rest of the world. Goenka's approach to teaching Vipassana is unique in its universality. He emphasizes that the practice transcends religious and cultural boundaries, making it accessible to all. He conducted courses globally, including in temples, mosques, churches, and even prisons, demonstrating the technique’s broad applicability. This inclusive approach played a key role in the rapid spread of Vipassana. To accommodate the growing demand for Vipassana courses, Goenka established the Vipassana International Academy, known as Dhamma Giri, in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, in 1976. This center became the heart of Vipassana activities in India and served as a model for many other centers. In 1986, Goenka founded the Vipassana Research Institute (VRI), focusing on the research and publication of Pāli texts, which are foundational to the teachings of the Buddha. Under Goenka's guidance, a global network of Vipassana centers was established. These centers, spread across six continents, facilitate the practice of Vipassana for people from all walks of life. By the time of his passing, there were over 300 permanent centers and more than 150 non-center locations offering courses in 110 countries. Each center adheres to the same principles and teachings, with courses conducted using Goenka’s recorded discourses, ensuring consistency in the practice worldwide. One of Goenka’s most significant contributions was the establishment of Vipassana courses in prisons, beginning with Jaipur’s central prison in 1974. This initiative expanded globally, with many prisons adopting the practice to help inmates reform and rehabilitate. Goenka also founded the Global Vipassana Pagoda near Mumbai, a monumental structure dedicated to preserving the teachings of the Buddha and housing a meditation hall capable of accommodating 8,000 people. The Pagoda serves as a symbol of gratitude to the Buddha and the teachers in Myanmar who preserved the Vipassana tradition. Throughout his life, Goenka trained numerous assistant teachers to ensure the continuity and purity of the practice. His contributions to interfaith harmony, education, and the global spread of Vipassana were recognized with numerous honors, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India. S.N. Goenka passed away on September 29, 2013, but his legacy endures through the vast network of Vipassana centers worldwide and the millions of people who continue to benefit from the practice. His tireless dedication to spreading Vipassana has left an indelible mark on the world, ensuring that this ancient technique remains accessible to all, regardless of background or belief.
