The Golden Bough: A Study in Comparative Religion was first published in 1890 in two volumes. Volume 1 opens with the priest at the sacred grove of Diana at Nemi, the image at the centre of the entire work. The 1890 first edition is much shorter than the twelve-volume third edition and represents Frazer's argument in its original and most concentrated form. This edition reproduces the standard 1890 text in full.
