“What have I done?” Carrie thinks as she scans the dry expanse of prairie stretching to the horizon. As far as she can see, there is nothing except a small clump of cottonwoods, their branches bare and forlorn in the deepening twilight. Deeply in love with Lieutenant Scott Benedict, she unexpectedly learns that he is engaged to another. To save her wounded pride, Carrie hastily marries Scott’s best friend, Lieutenant Douglas Cameron. Leaving her affluent New York home in 1870, she is on her way to Fort Sandford, Montana. Carrie realizes that her life now will be a struggle in this desolate landscape with Cameron, a husband she hardly knows. She also realizes that her heart will always belong to Benedict. Love and Regret follows thirty years of Carrie’s life from America’s frontier to the nation’s capitol. Eventually, she will again encounter her first love. Will Carrie and Scott be reunited?
