The Mayor of Casterbridge of Thomas Hardy is the second of “Vicans Story” of Hardy. The work describes a tragedy that took place in English villages and towns in the early 19th century, when capitalism developed in Britain and penetrated into the countryside. Through the description of the tragedy, the author of The Mayor of Casterbridge reveals to a certain extent the irrationality of the capitalist system and condemns the development of capitalism for bringing disasters to the working people.
