«William Wells Brown (1814 – 1884) was a prominent African-American author, playwright and lecturer who is considered one of the first significant antislavery activists. An escaped slave, he dedicated his life to writing a truthful memoirs, essays, novels, biographies and finally became the most widely published and influential slave narratives.
