This story is a record of the experiences Josiah Woods and those he sailed with had on their adventure on the high seas to Cuba and the Gulf of Guinea.
Josiah Woods lives in Topham, Massachusetts, where he lives and works with his uncle, Seth Upham. His life is simple, ordinary, without any problem. But, soon his life changes, with the coming of one man. Cornelius Gleaze comes to the home of Set and asks him and his nephew, Josiah, to join in a quest to Cuba to find a hidden treasure. Seth, enchanted by the thought of being rich, accepts the offer. All of this seems strange to Josiah, so he also accepts the offer, with the intention to be there as a support for his uncle and to see what links him to Cornelius.
And, so they start their quest, accompanied by two store-clerks of Seth, Arnold Lamont and Sim Muzzy, and the farmer Abraham Guptil. Everything seems usual, as a high sea adventure should look like. Well, at least until they reach Cuba and reveal that…
