Papers included in this volume attempt at presenting two different but complementary approaches to the contemporary Andean culture through the works of their artists. The authors have focused their analyses on the Sarhua’s paintings known as «tablas», one of the few pictorial manifestations of contemporary Peruvian indigenous culture.
The paintings of Sarhua have been the focus of previous studies by Lemlij and Millones. A huge manuscript on the theme by Millones was distinguished with the Spanish and Ibero-American Craftmanship Research Award organized in Tenerife. In turn, Lemlij presented a preliminary version of the text included in this volume at Harvard University, where he was invited as lecturer.
The interpretative perspectives provided by the above-mentioned authors give different, but complementary, angles to approach Peruvian popular art.
