An American surveyor for the United States government thinks Nanette, who is the adopted orphan daughter of Major Webb, of the United States cavalry, is spying and sharing sensitive secrets with her tribe, the Sioux. This is in support of the war with the pale faces. During an attack by the Sioux against the cavalry, he spots Nanette in a discussion with one of the Indians and becomes very suspicious. The Indian, eagle wing, fight and the Indian is killed. The body is then brought back to the fort by field and is identified as the black sheep son of Webb that turned against the cavalry and run away.
Nanette confesses to paying Field to keep him quiet. She was trying to protect the reputation of the man. The story goes even deeper as she discovers she is white and not Indian. The writing is very good and the character development smooth and easy to follow. It is a story of intrigue from a exciting period in the wild wild west. It is a classic and fun story of the relationships that intertwined with an undeclared war between two groups and based on race. If you like western backdrops and cowboys and Indians this book is for you.
