The Souls of Black Folk

W.E.B. Du Bois published The Souls of Black Folk, a collection of essays, in 1903. It was immediately acclaimed as an extraordinary work of literature. It explores a variety of subjects of black life, from the history of the Freedmen's Bureau and black music to Du Bois' experiences teaching in rural Georgia and Tennessee.
