Published three years after A Ten Year’s War, The Battle with the Slum is the sequel to Riis’ How the Other Half Lives. This book is a collection of Riis’ stories that were first published in the Century Magazine. The book picks up where Riis’ other books leave off, and it documents the changes and advancements that took place since the publications of his other pieces. In the book, Riis explores many aspects of life in the slums. He documents the lives of slum children, immigrants and other minorities, and he explores the efforts that charitable organizations have made in trying to improve living conditions for the poor. In addition to providing an account of Riis’ personal experience, the book also includes Riis’ own photographs of the New York City slums which sheds new light on what life in the tenements was like.
