Published in 2008, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the 1st novel in a trilogy by the same name. The 2nd and 3rd installments, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, were released the following years by Scholastic.
The novel follows a girl named Katniss living in a future, dystopian society, where she competes in an extreme reality T.V. show called the "Hunger Games." The book was a commercial megahit, selling almost 1 million copies in the U.S. It has since been translated into 26 languages and sold in 38 countries.
The Hunger Games was also well received by critics, in addition to winning the prestigious California Young Reader Medal, the novel was named a New York Times Notable Children's Book and 1 of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of the Year.
A film of The Hunger Games is scheduled for worldwide release by Lions Gate Entertainment in March 2012.
