NR Narayana Murthy was born on 20th August 1946, in Shidlaghatta, Kingdom of Mysore, British India. This, in today’s India is known as Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. He belonged to a lower-middle-class family. He joined IIM Ahmedabad and served as a Research Associate. He worked in the field of computer science and was a chief system programmer here. He wanted to learn deeply about computer science, before commencing his professional life. Mr. Murthy started his own company with the name, ‘Softronics’. He created this company as a part of his experiment to learn deeply about the computing business but It failed. In July 1981, Mr. Murthy along with 5 other software professionals, co-founded ‘Infosys’, with an initial capital of Rs. 10,000. In the initial years, it was able to secure collaboration with an American company and performed well. However, the collaboration collapsed in 1989 and Infosys too was on the verge of collapse. There was absolutely no source of funding. In 1991, the Government of India introduced economic reforms of liberalization, privatization to move towards globalization. The company got its way clear off many hurdles by this nudge resulting in leveraging of its business and it quickly became a success story. In the current time, the Infosys family has more than a lakh of members/employees. The company has registered massive business, revenue and profit growth. It maintained respectful relations with every stakeholder of its business throughout its journey. He has been awarded “Padma Shri” by the Government of India, for his immense contribution to the Indian IT sector in 2000. Later in 2008, he was awarded “Padma Vibhushan” and is regarded as the Father of Indian IT industry. Mr Murthy was the CEO of the company from 1981 to 2002. He has also been the chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Mentor after giving over the chief executive office to Mr. Nilekani. In August 2011, he received the title of 'Chairman Emeritus', as he retired from the company. Mr. Murthy has also served as a Director on the corporate board of HSBC, DNS Bank, Unilever, ICICI and NDTV. Mr. Murthy’s life has been an inspirational journey.
