Major Jackey Gore, an expert in all sports but golf, bets his rival that he can learn the game in one week. They set a challenge match at a famous Scottish course, the winner of which gains the right to propose to the woman they both love. The book takes a turn when a ghost offers Gore a set of enchanted clubs.
