In the 1930’s graduates, Ian and Elizabeth Macpherson opted out of the academic careers expected of them. Living in a wooden, gypsy-type van built on an old car chassis, they dealt with the Depression years by selling vegetables from the back of a pre-war Yankee Chalmers vehicle.
Elizabeth narrates their hilarious adventures going round the Badenoch area of the Scottish Highlands. With her keen eye and appreciation of the people they met, the book has huge charm owing much to the beguiling way she recounts a simpler time.
Those times, may have been Hard Times, but for the Macphersons, they were happy ones.
