Augustine of Hippo (November 13, 354 – August 28, 430), also known as St. Augustine, was Bishop of Hippo Regius. He was a Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian who lived in the Roman Africa Province. His writings were very influential in the development of Western Christianity.
According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine "established anew the ancient Faith" In his early years he was heavily influenced by Manichaeism and afterward by the Neo-Platonism of Plotinus. After his conversion to Christianity and baptism (AD 387), Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and different perspectives. He believed that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, and he framed the concepts of original sin and just war.
On the Grace of Christ and on Original Sin sets forth St. Augustine’s beliefs on original sin. In particular, he believed that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, and he framed the concepts of original sin. Augustine's concept of original sin was expounded in his works against the Pelagians. However, St. Thomas Aquinas took much of Augustine's theology while creating his own unique synthesis of Greek and Christian thought after the widespread rediscovery of the work of Aristotle. Augustine's doctrine of efficacious grace found eloquent expression in the works of Bernard of Clairvaux; also Reformation theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin would look back to him as their inspiration.
This edition of St. Augustine’s treatise is specially formatted with dozens of illustrations, including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, the paintings of Raphael, statues of Jesus and Mary, images of Saints, and more. It also includes a Table of Contents.
