Description

The Agnipurana counted as the eighth in the traditional list found in the Visnupurana , contains 383 chapters. In about 8,000 verses it treats of varied topics such as dharma, mantra and tantra, physiognomy, political expediency, genealogy of kings, medicine, equinology, veterinary science, science relating to elephants, metrics, poetics, grammar, lexicography, philosophical inquiries, brief accounts of the epics and the manifestations of lord Visnu, archery and account of Vedic literature. There is no second thought about the valuable nature of this Purana . The Agnipurana follows the general Puranic scheme and embodies theistic Sankhya theory of evolution. This we find described in chapter 20. It follows the general scheme and descri bes the secondary creation in chapters 18 and 19. The creation made by Daksa is also narrated herein. So also, it gives an account of the fourteen Manu-periods together with the respective sons, deities, seven sages and Indras in one chapter (chapter 150). Genealogies of the kings of the solar and lunar races are dealt with in six chapters (chapters 273-78). It is interesting to note that there are many interlocutors such as Agni, Narada, Hayagrlva, Isvara, Puskara, Rama, Samudra, Dhanvantari, Palakapya, Salihotra, Skanda, Kumara and Yama.
