Fayette longs for an exciting summer. And she gets it—on the back of a mule. A library in a saloon? In a general store? In a post office? Sounds crazy, but not to thirteen-year-old Fayette Ashmore’s mother. After all, during the summer of 1916 her job is to establish libraries in isolated villages in the rough country surrounding Monterey, California. Fayette and her brother, Eubie, accompany their mother on this wacky business trip. Escorted by a mule driver nicknamed Possum, the Ashmores find themselves having wild adventures and meeting kooky characters they’ll never forget.
