Description

«H.H. Munro (1870-1916), better known by the pen name Saki, was a prolific Scottish author of the Edwardian era, who is considered as the master of brief genre. He is best known for his witty, sometimes whimsical, often cynical and bizarre short stories – his works is the attempt to satirize the social pretension, unkindness, and stupidity through the flippant wit and acerbic humor.

"Sredni Vashtar" is a short story written between 1900 and 1911. Conradin, a sickly ten-year-old boy lives with his cousin and guardian, Mrs. De Ropp. He hates her with a desperate sincerity and feels unhappy himself. The only friend he has is a polecat-ferret whom he calls Sredni Vashtar.  He secretly takes care of him and invents a religion of his own with Sredni Vashtar as the merciless and vengeful god. Conradin keeps the ferret hidden in a cage in the garden shed, and worships the idol in secret. The story comes to a culmination when Mrs. De Ropp once discovers his god…
