How can I change my electrical usage to save money?
Everyone wants to save money, right? You want to keep the money you’ve earned to spend it on things you love like clothes, cars, movies, and flaming hot Cheetos! You could go to the extreme like these people. Maybe being this extreme isn’t your thing. However, you can save money by doing simple things around your home to use less electricity, which could help you save hundreds of dollars a year! That’s a lot of flaming hot Cheetos! You will be investigating the price of electrical usage for different appliances and electronics in your home in order to determine the maximum use for each appliance based on your budget.
Money in the Bank is a Project Based Learning Unit aligned to the Common Core State Standards. In this project, you will:
• Determine how much electricity your current appliances are using at home
• Use equations to compare your actual electric bill to the efficiency and power ratings on appliances
• Use inequalities to set an energy budget for your household
• Analyze your electricity usage in the summer and winter months and determine the best billing system from your energy provider
• Examine options for replacing existing appliances to reduce your expenditures on electricity
