THE beginning of the spring of the year 1576 witnessed great bustle and commotion in the fortress of Surya Mahal, the Sun Palace, which was built on the summit of a lofty hill in the interior of Mewar. It commanded a panoramic view of a vast stretch of wooded country of hills and valleys.
