The official residence of the President of the United States is now called The White House, a name which first popularly arose around 1811. Prior to that, it was variously referred to as the Presidential Mansion or the President's Palace. And though most Americans do not think of The White House as a palace, perhaps because of the association with monarchy, it fits the definition of a grand residence that is home to a head of state. This volume was published during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, at which time The White House was undergoing a major restoration.
