Calabash Caye is a small mangrove island with an expansive sandy beach on the eastern edge of Belize's Turneffe Atoll. Long occupied by humans, from Mayan times to its present-day role as a center for marine research and conservation, Calabash is home to a fascinating array of plants and fungi. This book records Calabash's most common and conspicuous plants and fungi, as photographed by marine biologists and conservationists over the period from 2012-2023. It is both a testament to the beauty of this island, and a record of its terrestrial biodiversity for posterity, because, like islands throughout the Caribbean, the distinctive plants and fungi of its littoral forest, mangroves, and beaches are threatened by habitat loss and climate change. All proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to support research and conservation efforts on Calabash Caye and the surrounding Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve through Friends of Calabash Caye.
