La oración es el tema más importante de la religión práctica. Todos los demás temas son secundarios. Leer la Biblia, guardar el sábado, escuchar sermones, asistir al culto público, ir a la mesa del Señor: todos estos son asuntos de mucho peso. Pero ninguno de ellos es tan importante como la oración privada...

1. La oración es absolutamente necesaria para la salvación del hombre. Digo que es absolutamente necesaria, y lo digo con conocimiento de causa. No estoy hablando ahora de infantes e idiotas. No estoy estableciendo el estado de los paganos. Recuerdo que donde se da poco, se requiere poco. Hablo especialmente de los que se llaman cristianos en una tierra como la nuestra. De ellos digo que ningún hombre o mujer puede esperar ser salvado si no ora.

Sostengo la salvación por la gracia tan firmemente como cualquiera. Con gusto ofrecería un perdón gratuito y completo al mayor pecador que jamás haya existido. No dudaría en estar junto a su lecho de muerte y decir: "Cree en el Señor Jesucristo, y serás salvo tú y tu casa" (Hechos 16:31). Pero que un hombre pueda tener la salvación sin pedirla, no puedo ver en la Biblia. Que un hombre reciba el perdón de sus pecados, que ni siquiera levante su corazón interiormente y diga: "Señor Jesús, dámelo", esto no lo puedo encontrar. Puedo encontrar que nadie se salvará por sus oraciones, pero no puedo encontrar que sin la oración nadie se salvará.

Habrá muchos a la derecha de Cristo en el último día. Los santos reunidos del Norte y del Sur, y del Este y del Oeste, serán "una gran multitud, que nadie puede contar" (Apocalipsis 7:9). El canto de victoria que brotará de sus bocas, cuando su redención sea por fin completa, será un canto verdaderamente glorioso. Será muy superior al ruido de muchas aguas y de poderosos truenos. Pero no habrá discordia en esa canción. Los que canten lo harán con un solo corazón y una sola voz. Su experiencia será una y la misma. Todos habrán creído. Todos habrán sido lavados en la sangre de Cristo. Todos habrán nacido de nuevo. Todos habrán orado. Sí, debemos orar en la tierra, o nunca alabaremos en el cielo. Debemos pasar por la escuela de la oración, o nunca seremos aptos para la fiesta de la alabanza. En resumen, no orar es estar sin Dios, sin Cristo, sin gracia, sin esperanza y sin cielo. Es estar en el camino del infierno.
