The history of the contemporary world as sung by a whale.
The trilogy Song of the Sea was conceived in the fall of 1984 in Dallas, Texas, as I sat in a hotel room at the Mansion at Turtle Creek. There was a story on the news regarding the mysterious beaching of some one hundred whales off the southern coast of the United States. I watched in morbid fascination, and then, like most of the stories I have written, the story began to write itself. I became lost in a fury of impassioned notes that would be the map for a journey I have just completed.
There is an intelligence in these beings called whale and dolphin, a unique intelligence beyond our ability to understand. One can see in their eyes – a flicker of recognition, a touching of souls.
Let’s assume that these beings sing one common song. For just a moment, let’s allow our imaginations to soar as, for the first time, we listen to a history of the Earth through the voices of the creatures that rule the sea.
