What dark force haunts the woods, and why has it set its sights on Dawn?
Cree receives a desperate plea from Chieftain Newlin of Clan Strathearn, an old ally who has never before asked for his help. People from Newlin's clan are vanishing without a trace, as if whisked away by an unseen force. With fear spreading like wildfire, Newlin turns to Cree, his only hope to uncover the truth.
Everyone fears the myth that wagging tongues claim is responsible for it. There was a time evil rose up in the land and swallowed people whole. Young or old, it did not matter, they simply vanished without a trace. People believed that a crack in the earth allowed demons to escape and they captured the innocent to serve their evil needs. Some believe it is nothing more than a tale to frighten people into submission. Truth or tale, no one knows for sure but all tread lightly, for if the myth proves true the demons will claim more souls to serve them.
Determined to protect his wife, Cree forbids Dawn from joining him on this perilous journey. But Dawn, ever stubborn and unshakable, refuses to stay behind. Reluctantly, Cree agrees, warning her to stay close. A promise she's determined to keep—until a grisly discovery in the snow changes everything. A man lies dead, his heart stolen, while strange hoofprints lead deeper into the woods. Another villager vanishes, leaving only fear in their wake.
As the mystery deepens, Cree and Dawn's bond is tested once more. Together, they must unravel the truth behind the disappearances before the ancient evil—or something far worse—claims them all. Will their love endure the shadows closing in, or will the myth become their reality?
