Es una comedia que narra los hechos que suceden durante el casamiento de Teseo, duque de Atenas, con Hipólita, reina de las amazonas. Incluye las aventuras de cuatro amantes atenienses y un grupo de seis actores aficionados que son controlados por las hadas que habitan en el bosque donde transcurre la mayor parte de la obra. La pieza es una de las más populares de Shakespeare. Durante la boda de Teseo e Hipólita tiene lugar una obra plagada de fantasía, sueños, amor y magia que se entremezclan en las historias de amor de dos parejas nobles, de unos cómicos despreocupados y un grupo de hadas. La historia está ambientada en Atenas y tiene cinco actos. Hermia está comprometida con Demetrio, pero está enamorada de Lisandro y no puede casarse con él porque su padre no lo acepta. Entonces esta pareja de enamorados decide fugarse al bosque. Hermia se lo cuenta a su amiga Helena en confianza, pero ella se lo cuenta a Demetrio porque está enamorada de él y cree que así se lo compensará. Los enamorados huyen perseguidos por Demetrio y este, por Helena. A su vez, los reyes de las hadas tienen una pelea, que hace que el rey le pida un líquido mágico a Puck que sirve para enamorarse de la primera persona que uno ve. Al ver a Demetrio y Helena pelearse, el rey de las hadas le ordena a Puck que vierta el jugo en los ojos del ateniense. El duende, sin embargo, se confunde y vierte el jugo en los ojos de Lisandro, quien se enamora de Helena. Para corregir el error, Oberón vierte el jugo también en los ojos de Demetrio, que se enamora de la misma mujer. Paralelamente, la reina de las hadas se enamora de uno de los actores, Bottom, a quien Puck hechizó poniéndole una cabeza de asno. Finalmente, el drama se soluciona con ambas parejas de humanos ya correspondidos y con el permiso de casarse libremente
