If your child is anything like ours, she loves your smartphone, tablet and laptop because of their relatively small sizes, accessibility and interactive content. We believe that technology is a tool that is neither inherently good nor bad. Instead of constantly telling our daughter “no” or “you can’t touch that,” my husband and I decided to grant her limited, structured and supervised access to a family device. How cool, we thought, would it be to create our own curriculum to teach her several things: 1) fundamental words and concepts; 2) smartphones, tablets and laptops can be used to create content to help others; 3) she has choices in the digital content that she consumes on these devices; 4) repetition breeds routine and 5) she can have fun doing it all!
