Die Deutung des Werks war und ist stark umstritten. Die Meinungen gehen und gingen auseinander, von lediglich geistigen Ergüssen eines wirrköpfigen Philosophen bis hin zu messianischer Verehrung und Exegese reichen die Beurteilungen.
