Dieses Buch machte Nietzsche in den Augen vieler endgültig zum geistigen Brandstifter und Volksverderber. Nietzsche selbst bezeichnete das Buch als "das tiefste Buch, das die Menschheit besitzt".

Die Deutung des Werks war und ist stark umstritten. Die Meinungen gehen und gingen auseinander, von lediglich geistigen Ergüssen eines wirrköpfigen Philosophen bis hin zu messianischer Verehrung und Exegese reichen die Beurteilungen.
